How the mean is calculated

Sum every value, then divide by the count. That is the arithmetic mean, the everyday “average.” It is the right tool for rates, costs per day, and anything where each observation should count the same.

If a few values are wildly larger than the rest, look at the median on mediancalculator.com as well. Both numbers are useful; they answer different questions.

Other averages on this page

When every number is positive, the calculator also shows the geometric mean (exp of the mean of logs) and the harmonic mean (the reciprocal of the mean of reciprocals). Speed averages and ratio averages often want the harmonic mean; growth factors want the geometric mean.

Sample standard deviation uses n − 1. Quartiles and Tukey outliers use the same sorted list as the median.

FAQ

Is this a weighted mean?

No. Every number has weight 1. Repeat a value if it should count twice.

Can I paste a spreadsheet column?

Yes. New lines, commas or spaces all work.

Population or sample σ?

Sample (n − 1) when there are at least two numbers.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The average is computed in this tab.
